Biography

Prior Background

Anneke has never known her parents or their origins, with her earliest memories being of Chantry Sisters and an orphanage near fields of tulips. Her magic made an incredibly early appearance, and she immediately passed into the hands of the Circle of Magi, landing in Kinloch Hold at the tender age of three. She gained a reputation for being a curious child, her lips often asking questions that were often, but not always answered. Sometimes these questions would end in her getting in trouble, but she never shied away from asking.

Even amongst her fellow children, her talent over her magical abilities stood out - it wasn't long before she caught the attention of the First Enchanter, Irving, who began to oversee some of her training. Everyone believed she would grow into a powerful and refined individual. Everything a good Circle mage should be. The hidden cost of this power, this notoriety, was that Anneke struggled to make genuine connections with others. She was held at a distance, the one someone else's efforts would be compared to, the example someone should follow. It chafed. She only considered Jowan a true friend, and with the differences in their abilities, tried her hardest to help him along. Completely unaware her efforts were only helping to breed resentment and feelings of inferiority towards her. To her, he was like her little brother, despite the fact he was older. That didn't matter to her.

It wasn't a secret she had a soft spot for children, and had planned, once she passed her Harrowing to achieve a position where she could help teach them. This, unfortunately, never occured.

Dragon Age: Origins

Prologue

Awoken by templars, she was taken to the top of Kinloch Hold to undergo her Harrowing. Pulled into the Fade itself, she was met by the spirit of an apprentice who failed theirs, and was now trapped in the Fade, named Mouse. She did not suspect Mouse, as it made sense to her a mage would still be able to recognise the energy of a fellow mage being dragged into the Fade, and hover nearby. However, she couldn't remember the last time someone had failed their Harrowing. Encountering a Spirit of Valour, she manages to secure herself a stave. At first, when she approached the Demon of Sloth in her way, she believed this was her test - to fell this creature. She was proven wrong, when the demon had no interest in trying to attack her head-on. It told her of the real test, a different demon waiting for her, hunting. When she bests it in a battle of riddles, it has no choice but to teach Mouse how to transform into an appearance like itself, one of a bear. She would need all the help she could get in the upcoming fight, as she had no clue what sort of demon waited for her. As a team, they fought and defeated the Demon of Rage, a creature of fire and lavae. But when the dust settled, and Anneke had a moment to process, she couldn't ignore what the demon had said. That it and Mouse had been a team, shared meals of mages brought to this place. She confronted Mouse when Mouse asked her to let it in when she would return from the Fade. Mouse revealed itself to be a Pride Demon, and Anneke left the Fade with a sense of unease. If it hadn't been for that slip-up, she might've been fond enough of Mouse to try to find if there was a way to rescue him from there, believing its tale. She had almost fallen for her own sense of ego.

Met by Jowan, her closest friend when she woke up, he was clearly feeling lonely about the fact she'd be moving out of the apprentice quarters, and he tried to press her for information about the Harrowing. She told him that he knew she couldn't say anything about it, but that it was a matter of days before he'd be going in for his. He didn't share this opinion. She tried comforting him. She was told that Irving wanted to see her, and so, Jowan was left to his mood. Irving congratulated her on her success, but he was not alone in his quarters. By his side was a man called Duncan, and he was a Grey Warden. Not just any warden, but the Warden-Commander of Fereldan. She did not need to ask why he was there, their organisation only came for recruits, but she did wonder why. Irving asked her to escort Duncan to his room, and she did so, politely making conversation. She learned that there was a great incursion of Darkspawn in the Korcari Wilds, to the south east of the tower. That Duncan believed it to be a Blight. That thought did scare her. She knew of the devastation that would leave, and even away in the Tower, the effects of it would be felt. She recommended he consider Jowan as one of his recruits - he asked her if she had any desires to be included. She said no.

She had just left Duncan's room when she was caught by Jowan again, desperate to have her join him to talk. Though her mind was still filled with thoughts about Duncan, and what his presence meant for her and the mages, she went with him, and they end up in the small Chantry in the tower. Greeted by a Sister she recognised by her face, but not her name, a newer presence. She asked Jowan to explain, and what he told her next shocked her. Jowan admitted to being in a relationship with the Sister, a woman named Lily, and that he wished to flee the Circle, and he wanted her help to do so. She was stunned. She was happy he found someone, but of all people, he chose someone from the Chantry? From the church? And now, he wanted to become an apostate mage, hunted by the templars at every turn? She tried to convince him to reconsider, but he refused, and she was reluctant to help until he told her he'd seen the document approving turning him tranquil. That shifted everything for her. She couldn't let them, not even Irving, turn Jowan into one of those unfeeling, cold people. To see him working in the storeroom, and ask her questions in that emotionless tone. No, not if she could prevent it. So she agreed to help.
