Biography
Prior to Game Events
She was born on the 17th of August 9:03 Dragon in an otherwise unremarkable region of Ferelden to Malcolm and Leandra Hawke. Her early years were spent in a small village with nothing but love, until her magic surfaced. Leandra's deeply hidden fears about her children becoming mages was realised when at the tender age of five, Annalyn set her childhood bed on fire in her sleep. Malcolm however, did not feel the same worry. He was certain he could raise Annalyn safely as an apostate, and teach her how to hide her abilities. From then on, the family adopted a nomadic lifestyle, never staying in a single place for too long for their safety. Annalyn's connection to her magic, particularly to fire was strong, and accidents involving her flames making an appearance when they shouldn't were not, despite Malcolm's best efforts, uncommon. Things only became more complicated after Bethany, her younger sister, awoke her own magic. With two out of their three children mages, the Hawkes' had their work cut out for them.
Eventually the family settled in the village of Lothering, right by the Imperial Highway. By this time Annalyn was in her late teens, and excelled at hiding her abilities. She gained a reputation as she did odd-jobs around the town, helping anyone out with their troubles for some coin. Bethany kept to herself, kept quiet and safe, just like Malcolm wanted. Carver, her younger brother and the only-non mage child, found himself friends. He seemed happier. But, she had a secret. Something she kept from the rest of the family, even her father. Often when Annalyn slept, her dreams had her hunted by a demon. It sought her out in the Fade, and knew her well. It could call to mind every failing, every moment of fear she had ever experienced. It told her how inescapable the situation she had found herself in, how it was only a matter of time before the Templars came for them too and tore their family apart... unless, she let it in. It could give her the power she needed to keep everyone safe.
She refused it every time. She wasn't fooled, even afraid as she was, she knew a demon's tricks. But the nights sapped her energy, and she'd fight sleep as much as possible. Her family noticed, and expressed concern, but soon were distracted by tragedy. Malcolm's passing destroyed the family as they'd known it. Without him, Annalyn felt like the floor was ripped out from under her. Any sense of safety she'd felt with her father by her side was now gone. Leandra's reaction did not help. She utterly shut down in her grief, leaving her children to mostly fend for themselves. Annalyn could not bear to see her siblings left alone in their mourning and so she shoved down her own feelings, and set to work providing for the family. This only worsened her relationship with Carver, who saw her as being cold and cruel, like she didn't even miss him, like this had just been an opportunity. It didn't help that now everyone would talk of Hawke, meaning her. Bitterness grew in his heart. He didn't see how everything she did was motivated by her fear that something terrible would happen to them. As soon as he could, he enlisted in the army. That left her with her mother, and Bethany. Their relationship had always been good, but the death of their father brought them closer. Bethany relied on her, and she welcomed the burden because she loved her, and that was her job as her big sister.
Beginning of Dragon Age: II
When the Fifth Blight began in 9:30 Dragon, Carver barely made it back from the slaughter at Ostagar to Lothering in time to warn his family, but he managed it. With darkspawn hot on their heels, Annalyn led her family on a desperate journey north, to escape Ferelden. Many times they were caught by darkspawn and had to fight their way out. In one of these battles, a massive ogre charged at Bethany, and she could not reach her in time. Annalyn and the rest of her family could only watch as the ogre took Bethany's life. She'd failed. It haunts her dreams the entire boat ride to Kirkwall. Aveline, a woman they met on the run from the Blight, chooses to stay with them as they travel, and the pair silently stew in their mutual losses. Leandra, in a moment of grief, blames Annalyn for Bethany's death. And the demon keeps whispering in her dreams.
They're unable to enter Kirkwall when they reach it, as the city guard is preventing as many refugees as they can from entering the city. She saves a guardsman from dying to a group of disgruntled deserters, and as a favour, he finds the uncle she's never known to help their family get in. Gamlen, the younger brother of Leandra comes to them after three days, and his only plan is to have Annalyn and Carver become indentured servants to someone who can pay their way in. Without any other options, she takes it. Annalyn chooses to work for Athenril, and becomes a smuggler. Carver and Aveline are not happy about it.
